Please tell me your thoughts on eye avatars 👁️
thank you so much for asking!!!
so this is more about the fandom treating the Fears more like percy jackson gods that give you cool powers other than manifestations of fear and suffering, ignoring that to be an avatar you have to be willing to hurt people. and the Eye is a perfect test for it because it doesn't cause physical harm and it's not really a common fear (both in real life and in universe there aren't that many Eye specific statements compared to the other fears). and of course, Jon is an Eye avatar
the thing is the Eye isn't simply desire to know, it's invasion of privacy, it's vouyerism. and the desire to know isn't just curiosity, it's something that would drive you both to self destruction and crossing other people's boundaries. that's what that moment in s3 of Jon blackmailing that guy for information, he hesitates but ultimately pulls that man's secret out of him because he decides it's more important. and the information that man gives isn't even that important! and that's the point, it's about Jon's willingness to do anything for the information and knowledge, not just his desire to know and understand
this is why I side eye people who reduce the Eye only to curiosity. the invasion of privacy and vouyerism are what makes an Eye avatar Eye avatar
@blinddetective OP posted the analysis 👀 (also,, YES GOOD ANALYSIS 10/10)
YES YES YES
Slight disagreement on the lack of eye statements being proof the fear is uncommon- The Institute is set up as a way to feed the Eye by ‘stealing’ the other fears victims/revictimizing them. Therefore it will necessarily have less cannibalistic statements as the power of the institute will not want to draw those its already victimized.
I meant it being less common irl! so that the fans who aren't afraid of being watched additionally don't think much of it because there aren't many statements detailing how terrifying it actually is. not that the lack of statements means people in universe don't fear the Eye. and yes, absolutely, the Institute also bans statements about dreams (and what does the Archivist do? haunts nightmares)
@kairos-polaris I bring it up because Stranger is also kind of uncommon but there is the Circus and they cause direct physical harm (skinning people) so even if people don't understand the whole point of it they still understand it's scary and more than just clowns/puppets like they see Eye being about curiosity and not invasion of privacy
@kairos-polaris I do agree with the stranger being a less common fear irl tho.. it seems like more of a trope of a fear
@two-pupils yeah,,, it does feel very trope-y in a bad way. I understand that Smirke's classification is flawed in the first place but also does it make sense for him to make the Stranger a separate fear? it's so intertwined with the Spiral it would make more sense as one fear. but I can see why they separated them for plot purposes?
Is it less common tho? I think public speaking is a very common fear, fearing judgement from others, having your secrets and embarrassments exposed is very typical fear too. Especially with social media so much of our lives are out in the open for everyone I think its more likely that most tma fans (not you to be clear) have no interest in digging deep into what falls under a fear and so each fear has become flanderized including the eye. The eye is only bookworms and vaguely ~forbidden secrets~
Oops this was meant to be a reply but tumblr bugged
and I think it's so sad! like why are you even listening to a story about eldritch horrors if you aren't going to think about them?? actually I need to make a separate post about Web, the classification system and why it's not pointless to think of the entities in terms of what fear they specifically represent despite them being one thing (*cough*they're all one thing except for the Web who is sentient and master manipulator because that makes so much sense/sarcasm*cough*)
@kairos-polaris If i was jonny sims i would be suicidal over my art being treated like this tbh
@two-pupils yeah and on one hand you (general) need to be ready for the audience to engage with your work in ways you don't intend or misunderstand it but on the other I already get so annoyed when people misunderstand my silly little tumblr posts. also. he is kind of to blame for it, with all the fanservice especially in protocol
